Understand what the device measures
Fuel level, fuel used and refuelling are different signals. A tank-level percentage is not consumption. Before combining vehicles, record whether values come from CAN, an external sensor, a calculated estimate or transaction data.
Compare like with like
Group by vehicle class, duty cycle, load and route characteristics. Use the same units and time window. A motorway tractor unit and a stop-start delivery van cannot be judged fairly against the same efficiency target.
Handle gaps explicitly
Exclude periods with missing distance or implausible readings from efficiency calculations and publish the coverage alongside the result. Investigate abrupt level changes against vehicle movement, refuelling records and sensor calibration before labelling a fuel-loss event.
Turn findings into actions
Select one controllable contributor, such as unnecessary idling, and agree a baseline. Review operational reasons before intervening: some vehicles need engine operation for auxiliary equipment. Recheck the result over comparable work.
Your action checklist
- Record measurement source
- Standardise litres and distance
- Show coverage with every comparison
