Fleet Management Glossary
Fleet technology, explained clearly
18 terms
- ADAS
- Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: technologies that warn or assist a driver, such as following-distance or lane-departure alerts. Available functions depend on the installed system.
- API
- Application Programming Interface: a defined way for software systems to exchange information. Permissions, field definitions and error handling are part of the contract.
- CAN bus
- Controller Area Network: the vehicle network through which electronic control units exchange messages. Available fleet data varies by vehicle and integration.
- DMS
- Driver Monitoring System: a system that detects selected in-cab behaviours or signs associated with driver attention. Detections require context and appropriate review.
- DTC
- Diagnostic Trouble Code: a fault code reported by a vehicle system. A code supports investigation; it is not a complete repair diagnosis.
- EV
- Electric vehicle. Fleet analysis typically considers duty cycle, battery state of charge, energy consumption and charging availability.
- FNOL
- First Notification of Loss: the initial report of an incident to the relevant claims process, supported by available facts and evidence.
- Geofence
- A virtual geographic boundary used to identify entry, exit or presence. Accuracy depends on position quality and configuration.
- GNSS
- Global Navigation Satellite System: the broader category of satellite positioning systems, including GPS.
- Idling
- Engine operation while a vehicle is stationary. Some idling supports operational equipment, so context matters when assessing avoidable fuel use.
- MDVR
- Mobile Digital Video Recorder: an in-vehicle recording unit that can capture multiple camera channels, with connectivity and storage depending on the model.
- OEM data
- Data supplied through a vehicle manufacturer’s systems. Coverage, permissions and signal definitions vary.
- ROI
- Return on investment: net benefit divided by investment over a stated period. Cost boundaries and assumptions must be consistent.
- State of charge
- An estimate of remaining battery charge, usually expressed as a percentage. It is distinct from battery health and charging status.
- Tachograph
- Equipment that records specified vehicle and driver activity. Remote download availability depends on compatible hardware, authorisation and configuration.
- Telematics
- The collection and communication of vehicle or asset data to support operational decisions.
- TPMS
- Tyre Pressure Monitoring System: sensors and related systems for reporting tyre pressure, and sometimes temperature.
- Video telematics
- The combination of vehicle data and camera recordings to provide context for safety, operations and incident review.
